    Exploring different instructional designs of a screen-captured video lesson: A mixed methods study of transfer of learnng

    Digital instruction, whether in the form of training delivered on CD/DVD-ROMs or online courses delivered via the Internet is being used in all levels of education. It can, after all, increase student achievement if designed properly (Moersch, 1999). Many established instructional technologies (e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint®) have been researched to determine effective and ineffective instructional designs. However, newer technologies such as screen-captured videos, have not. Because the research of newer, multimedia instructional technology is \u27in its infancy\u27 (Mayer, 2001, p.194), a timely challenge for instructional technologists is to determine how to design and research these technologies. Theoretical frameworks on which to base these designs include Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML). Each is based on Baddeley\u27s (1992) working memory model that says that our ability to think and process is constrained by working memory limitations. According to CLT, when learning new information, working memory can be overloaded by ineffectively designed instruction. One effective instructional design technique that can alleviate cognitive overload is the integration of scaffolds that serve as a bridge between what students know and what they have not yet learned. Similar to CLT, CTML also focuses on how to reduce cognitive load, only within a multimedia-based learning environment. An outcome of CTML is the segmenting effect, in which long periods of instruction are broken down into smaller sections in order to allow for better learning. Using these techniques, the researcher designed a mixed-methods study, which combined a 2x2 factorial-designed experiment with follow-up, qualitative interviews. Learning effects were tested with 108 participants at a Southeastern university who were given one of four different versions of screen-captured video lessons. Through the implementation of instructional techniques (scaffolding and segmentation) designed to decrease extraneous load, the researcher hoped but failed to promote long-term learning. Whereas an immediate test of learning transfer suggested that the effectiveness of the four instructional designs varied, the delayed measure of transfer indicated that those initial differences were fleeting.     The complex dynamics of agriculture as a financial asset: introduction to a symposium

    The contemporary process of financialization has been a major driver of the remarkable changes witnessed in global food and agricultural markets over the past decade, contributing to the rise and subsequent volatility of food and agricultural commodity prices since 2006. In the wake of these developments it has become clear that the turmoil has intensified the relationship between agriculture and finance in ways that have profound and enduring implications for the sector, and the people whose lives and livelihoods depend upon it. This symposium brings together four original research articles that contemplate the contemporary relationship between the agrifood and financial sectors. They examine a variety of overlapping themes, including the creation of financial assets from farmland and agricultural commodities, the activities of different types of investors in these assets in specific geographic contexts, and the challenges of governing this activity at the global scale. These articles show that the period of market volatility that began a decade ago reinvigorated investor interest in financial products linked to agriculture and farming, and inspired the packaging of new farms of financial assets in ways that have affected politics and practice on the ground, and are likely to leave a lasting legacy

    Corporate social responsibility in developing country multinationals: identifying company and country-level influences

    The extant literature on cross-national differences in approaches to corporate social responsibility (CSR) has mostly focused on developed countries. Instead, we offer two inter-related studies into corporate codes of conduct issued by developing country multinational enterprises (DMNEs). First, we analyse code adoption rates and code content through a mixed methods design. Second, we use multilevel analyses to examine country-level drivers of differences in code content-specifically, elements of a country's National Business System (NBS). We find that DMNEs are much more likely to adopt a code of conduct than their domestic counterparts; however, this does not translate into greater code comprehensiveness. We also find support for the 'substitute view' of CSR in developing countries, i.e. that MNEs from poorer countries and from countries with lower governance effectiveness tend to express more comprehensive commitments. However, this dynamic does not extend to a country's labour system; instead, CSR appears here to match the efficiency of a country's labour market, thus reflecting the 'mirror view' of CSR

    Change, Choice, and Commercialization: Backpacker Routes in Southeast Asia

    South-East Asia has the oldest and largest backpacker trails. This paper examines the geographies of such flows, drawing upon the largest survey to date of backpackers in Asia using qualitative research to survey the key changes from the 1970s to the 2000s. Backpacker trails have changed significantly and new routes have emerged including the ‘northern trail’ (Bangkok - Cambodia - Vietnam - Laos). It is to be expected that routes change as backpackers constantly seek new places, pioneering for later mass tourism. However, this paper suggests that using institutionalization as a framework, these changing trails and backpacker ‘choices’ can be seen as driven by growing commercialization and institutionalization. This then operates in combination with external variables (travel innovations - low cost airlines, and new transport networks); exogenous shock (political instability, terrorism); and growing regional competition from emerging destinations such as Vietnam and Cambodia

    Management practices as risk factors for the presence of bulk milk antibodies to Salmonella, Neospora caninum and Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo in Irish dairy herds

    peer-reviewedA survey of management practices in 309 Irish dairy herds was used to identify risk factors for the presence of antibodies to Salmonella, Neospora caninum and Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo in extensively managed unvaccinated dairy herds. A previous study documented a herd-level seroprevalence in bulk milk of 49%, 19% and 86% for Salmonella, Neospora caninum and leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo, respectively in the unvaccinated proportion of these 309 herds in 2009. Association analyses in the present study were carried out using multiple logistic regression models. Herds where cattle were purchased or introduced had a greater likelihood of being positive to leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo (P<0.01) and Salmonella (P<0.01). Larger herds had a greater likelihood of recording a positive bulk milk antibody result to leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo (P<0.05). Herds that practiced year round calving were more likely to be positive to Neospora caninum (P<0.05) compared to herds with a spring-calving season, with no difference in risk between herds that practiced split calving compared to herds that practiced spring calving. No association was found between presence of dogs on farms and prevalence of Neospora caninum possibly due to limited access of dogs to infected materials including afterbirths. The information from this study will assist in the design of suitable control programmes for the diseases under investigation in pasture-based livestock systems

    Quantum Collapse of a Small Dust Shell

    The full quantum mechanical collapse of a small relativistic dust shell is studied analytically, asymptotically and numerically starting from the exact finite dimensional classical reduced Hamiltonian recently derived by H\'aj{\'\i}\v{c}ek and Kucha\v{r}. The formulation of the quantum mechanics encounters two problems. The first is the multivalued nature of the Hamiltonian and the second is the construction of an appropriate self adjoint momentum operator in the space of the shell motion which is confined to a half line. The first problem is solved by identifying and neglecting orbits of small action in order to obtain a single valued Hamiltonian. The second problem is solved by introducing an appropriate lapse function. The resulting quantum mechanics is then studied by means of analytical and numerical techniques. We find that the region of total collapse has very small probability. We also find that the solution concentrates around the classical Schwarzschild radius. The present work obtains from first principles a quantum mechanics for the shell and provides numerical solutions, whose behavior is explained by a detailed WKB analysis for a wide class of collapsing shells.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, Revtex4 fil

    Association between an AMH promoter polymorphism and serum AMH levels in PCOS patients

    STUDY QUESTION: Do polymorphisms in the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) promoter have an effect on AMH levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: We have identified a novel AMH promoter polymorphism rs10406324 that is associated with lower serum AMH levels and is suggested to play a role in the mechanism of regulation of AMH gene expression in women. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Follicle number is positively correlated with serum AMH levels, reflected by elevated AMH levels in women with PCOS. In addition, it is suggested that AMH production per follicle is higher in women with PCOS than in normo-ovulatory women, implying an altered regulation of AMH in PCOS. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A discovery cohort of 655 PCOS women of Northern European ancestry and both an internal and external validation PCOS cohort (n = 458 and n = 321, respectively) were included in this study. Summary-level data of an AMH genome-wide association study meta-analysis including 7049 normo-ovulatory women was included as a control cohort. A genetic approach was taken through association analysis and in silico analysis of the associated variants in the AMH promoter. In vitro analysis was performed to investigate the functional mechanisms. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: All common two-allelic single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the region Chr19:2 245 353–2 250 827 bp (Build 37) were selected for the analysis. Linear regression analyses were performed to determine the association between SNPs in the AMH promoter region and serum AMH levels. For the in silico analysis, the webtools ‘HaploReg’ v4.1 for ENCODE prediction weight matrices and ‘atSNP’ were used. In vitro analysis was performed using KK1 cells, a mouse granulosa cell line and COV434 cells, a human granulosa tumor cell line. Cells were transfected with the reference or the variant human AMH promoter reporter construct together with several transcription factors (TFs). Dual-Glo(®) Luciferase Assay was performed to measure the luciferase activity. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Polymorphism rs10406324 was significantly associated with serum AMH levels in all three PCOS cohorts. Carriers of the minor allele G had significantly lower log-transformed serum AMH levels compared to non-carriers (P = 8.58 × 10(−8), P = 1.35 × 10(−3) and P = 1.24 × 10(−3), respectively). This result was validated in a subsequent meta-analysis (P = 3.24 × 10(−12)). Interestingly, rs10406324 was not associated with follicle count, nor with other clinical traits. Also, in normo-ovulatory women, the minor allele of this variant was associated with lower serum AMH levels (P = 1.04 × 10(−5)). These findings suggest that polymorphism rs10406324 plays a role in the regulation of AMH expression, irrespective of clinical background. In silico analysis suggested a decreased binding affinity of the TFs steroidogenenic factor 1, estrogen-related receptor alpha and glucocorticoid receptor to the minor allele G variant, however in vitro analysis did not show a difference in promoter activity between the A and G allele. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Functional analyses were performed in a mouse and a human granulosa cell line using an AMH promoter reporter construct. This may have limited assessment of the impact of the polymorphism on higher order chromatin structures. Human granulosa cells generated from induced pluripotent stem cells, combined with gene editing, may provide a method to elucidate the exact mechanism behind the decrease in serum AMH levels in carriers of the −210 G allele. We acknowledge that the lack of follicle number in the external validation and the control cohort is a limitation of the paper. Although we observed that the association between rs10406324 and AMH levels was independent of follicle number in our discovery and internal validation PCOS cohorts, we cannot fully rule out that the observed effects on serum AMH levels are, in part, caused by differences in follicle number. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: These results suggest that variations in serum AMH levels are not only caused by differences in follicle number but also by genetic factors. Therefore, the genetic context should be taken into consideration when assessing serum AMH levels in women. This may have clinical consequences when serum AMH levels are used as a marker for the polycystic ovarian morphology phenotype. STUDY FUNDING/COMPETING INTEREST(S): No external funding was used.
